After Recent Google's Penguin Update link is one of the most talked topics. Which links are good? Which links are bad?
There are three kinds of links:
1. Links that help SEO. We can call it SEO helping link.
2. Links that hurt SEO. We can call it SEO hurting link.
3. Links that Search engine ignore.
Google and Bing, generally ignore a lot of links. But search engine will not tell you which links they are ignoring. They will just give you various types of data. Like which links they manipulate, which links effective and which links has no effect.
Also search Engines will give you data from which you can get understand about over optimized sites. Suppose you create links with Anchor Text "Link building":, If your content contains 17% this keyword, it's ok. But if it is contain 30 or 40% it will consider as over optimized and search engine will ignore it. Lets have a look to a Distribution curve:

In Bing, they are showing Recent Tweets about the searched topics.
If you search anything in Bing by logging in on Facebook, They will show Experts profile on that topic in sidebar. It's new system of Facebook Bing integration

Though Social Media Links are No follow and Search engines has limitation in indexing social media links, It has great positive impact on SEO. I hope in future website's social media strength will be one of the major factor of Ranking.
People think link building is mostly forum posting. They are creating account in different forums and posting links. Search engines are started to count these links as spam. So forum posting will not work in near future. It's not good for your SEO.
You can use forum to buils your network, NOT for posting your links.
Generally Educational and government organizations use Edu and Gov link. So these links has a high value in search engines. It's very good if you can get a real backlink from these sites. But recently Black hat Seo peoples created different ways to create edu and gov backlinks. Google and other search engines will count these as spam.
Content link mean link in content. Write on relevant other blogs ans add your link there. These links has high value in search engines. Build good network with real blogger not content marketer. Write in their blogs and publish their post in your blog. Both of you blog owner will get benefit from this.
And Remember for a blogger, Relation building with other bloggers and readers is not less important than link building.

If you add a link here like "Click Here", that will not be much effective in search engines. You can use your keywords as anchor text. You can use this anchor text keyword in your post title's h1( head Tag). Thats a very good seo practise.
2. Reciprocal Link
In different communities and free directories after sign up they give you a link or badge to put in your website. These are called reciprocal link. Reciprocal link is some time good for traffic. But bad for your your search engine rankings. Search engines is very hard against these links.
3.Link Directories
You will see many link directories saying "50$= link directory submission just fir 50$" "SEO link directory" etc... These are worst for SEO. Never try these directories. Google and other search engines ignore these sites.
Only you can add your links to relevant directories. If your site is about "Golf" submit your site in Golf directory.
4. Link in content
Content marketing is very popular now a days. Article spinners are making Ten articles from one and submitting them in different blogs. They are using guest blogging site like myblogguest for this Cheating work. These articles has no SEO vvalue. So you will not get any traffic by these articles. Moreover, You have to give them two links.
Most often,, they will add a commercial sites link, irrelevant to your site. It's worst for your SEO.
So don't publish these articles in your blog. And don't allow irrelevant Links in post. It will decrease your SEOvalue.
5. Article Site
Submission in articles site was a old seo tactics. But it's will not work any more. One best article submission site Ezine Article recently hit hard by google for copy content. So it's just waste of time building link on article sites.

6. Press release link
Typical press release link is not good for seo. Search engines just ignore them as copy content. But if any blogger or journalist write something real about press release that can work.
So, Press Release submission is another time wasting process.
7. Blog Roll link
Link in blog roll is good for traffic. But not Good for seo. You can Keep one or two blog roll link. Not many links. Otherwise search engine will think your site as a low class directory. It will decrease your seo value.
8. Badges and Apps
Badges and Apps are a clever way to build link. But unfortunately search engines started to ignoring these links. Many established site banged after penguin update for badges and apps links. So it will not work any more.
9. Infographics
Many peoples are now building links by info graphic. But Google recently says they will look over it. So i am not seeing any hope for infographics link building.
10. Social Media
Social Media links are best. You know Google+ is related to Google and Facebook, Twitter related to Bing. So Social media now search engine friendly. New image sharing social media pinterest is also loved by Google and Bing:
